As the host city for the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting this November, Shenzhen is pulling out all the stops to present its best face to the world.
2026 marks the "China Year" of APEC, and to ensure the city shines on the global stage, the Shenzhen Committee of the Communist Youth League and the Shenzhen Volunteers Federation jointly launched the "Woodpecker Action" on March 5.
This initiative invites volunteers and citizens to become "city woodpeckers"—taking to the streets to check public multilingual signage.
From metro announcements and city maps to street signs and directional guides, these details help shape visitors' first impressions of Shenzhen.
The goal? To ensure every sign is accurate, clear, and properly maintained, creating a friendlier, more welcoming and standardized multilingual environment.
Getting involved is simple. Residents can use the "Volunteer Shenzhen" mini program to instantly report issues such as incorrect, missing, or damaged foreign-language signage.
With one click, they can upload a photo, automatically generate the location information, and even cross-check translations against the city's official database—making feedback accurate and efficient.
"Every time you document a sign, you're helping reshape Shenzhen's image," the campaign says. "Helping build a city where every detail is picture-perfect."
As Shenzhen counts down to the APEC meetings, it's calling on everyone to join this volunteer effort. After all, a warm, clear, and welcoming city leaves the best impression.
