The 3rd Seminar on International Politics, Geopolitics and International Economy was Held at GDUFS

On April 14th,2019, the 3rd Seminar on International Politics, Geopolitics and International Economy was held at GDUFS. The seminar was jointly hosted by Youth Forum of International Trade Cooperative Group of National Universities and New Economic Geography Committee of China Association for Regional Science, sponsored by GIIS, and co-sponsored by Institute of Geopolitics and Politics of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Institute of Geopolitics and Economics of Zhejiang Gongshang University, editorial office of Journal of Strategy and Decision-making, and editorial office of International Economics and Trade Research, with strong support from the Journal of World Economy and China & World Economy. Experts and scholars from more than 20 universities across the country attended the seminar and had a deep exchange of views on a series of conflicts and problems in international politics, geopolitics and international economy in the context of an uneven development of the world politics and economy and a dramatic change in the power balance in the world.

On behalf of the university, Yang Aimin, vice president of GDUFS at the opening speech, extended a warm welcome to the experts and scholars present at the seminar and expressed thanks to them for their long-term support of GDUFS and GIIS. Sun Churen, deputy secretary general of Youth Forum of International Trade Cooperative Group of National Universities, expressed his hope that this seminar will facilitate the intersection and development of relevant disciplines, and introduce a group of outstanding young scholars who have their own ideas with abundant researches.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Professor Li Qing, director of the Collaborative Innovation Center for 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Studies and attended by Chen Ping, director of the Scientific Research Division of GDUFS.

In the discussion session, scholars present their papers first and then other participants freely ask questions and have discussions. Each paper will be presented and discussed for as long as 40 minutes, giving scholars sufficient time for deep discussion. Song Zhigang, deputy director of the editorial office of the Journal of World Economy presided over the first stage of the morning seminar, at which three scholars made speeches on special topics. Professor Liu Wenge from school of economics of Zhejiang Gongshang University, analyzed the influence of institutional distance between countries on OFDI location choice path based on the empirical evidence of China’s OFDI. Associate professor Kuang Yanxiang from school of Marxism of Nanjing Audit University made a presentation of her paper titled “Economic Interdependence and Escalation of Conflict”. Sun Xihui, a researcher from Institute of Asia Pacific and Global Strategy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, made an analysis of the theory and reality of the international economic order vicissitude on the basis of the concept of structuralization.

The second stage of the morning seminar was officiated by Chen Weiguang, chief editor of International Economics and Trade Research, at which two scholars delivered speeches on special topics. Xu Lihe, an associate researcher from GIIS made a comparison of China’s and America’s aid to the industrial development of Africa. Professor Sun Churen from school of international business of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics conducted an empirical study of diplomatic factors in the decision-making of Chinese enterprises’ OFDI based on the strategy of partnership diplomacy.

The seminar in the afternoon took the form of two parallel forums. Parallel forum one was presided over by Li Yuanfang, an editor of China & World Economy at which four scholars made speeches on special topics. Yang Gongyan, an associate professor from school of international relations of Liaoning University, analyzed the international political effects of China’s overseas investment boom. Dr. Yi Zhengrong from school of international business of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics analyzed the relationship between diplomatic partnership, political attributes of product and the stability of China’s bulk commodity import. Associate professor Liu Jian from school of international economics and trade of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics conducted a research on bilateral political relations and China’s oil import security. Dr. Xia Jiejin from school of economics & trade of Hunan University expounded the influence of political relations between countries and the Belt and Road Initiative on enterprises’ OFDI.

Parallel forum two was chaired by Liu Wenge, at which four scholars made speeches on special topics. Dr. Cai Bohou from school of economics of Xiamen University elaborated the problems of South-South FTA, the extensive margin and FTA utilization rate. Professor Li Junjiu from school of economics of Jilin University analyzed the problems of global value chain embeddedness and Southeast Asian trading countries. Associate professor Zhang Zhiming from school of economics and trade of GDUFS discussed how geographical distance affects global value chain cooperation. Associate professor Jiang Wei from Beijing University of Technology made an analysis of the impact of RMB exchange rate fluctuations on the quality of imported products for Chinese manufacturing enterprises.

Before the afternoon parallel forums, the seminar also held discussions between the editorial offices of the Journal of World Economy, China & World Economy, International Economics and Trade Research, Journal of Strategy and Decision-making and their readers. The four editors, Song Zhigang, Li Yuanfang, Chen Weiguang and Chen Hanxi, introduced information about the four journals respectively concerning academic orientation, submission process and review period. They also had a heated discussion with the participants.
