GIIS Paid Research Visits to Major US Universities and Think Tanks

From 2nd to 6th May, Prof. Li Qing, Prof. Zeng Chuhong, Prof. Cheng Yonglin, Prof. Han Yonghui from GIIS paid research visits to well-known universities and think tanks and financial institutions in the United States. In addition, the delegation also paid an official visit to Mr. Cheng Leidai, Consular General of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York, and exchanged with him views on issues such as the implementation of the strategic cooperation between GIIS and some US Universities and research institutes, the preparation for the China (Guangdong) International Think Tank Forum of 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, Sino-US trade and investment cooperation as well as bilateral relationship, etc.

In the afternoon of 2nd May, the delegation reached Harvard University and discussed in-depth with Prof. Wang Yongqin, a Fulbright scholar in the Harvard University Department of Economics, on issues like the political and economic situation inside the US, the US business investment policy towards China as well as the bilateral economic and financial integration, etc.

In the morning of 3rd May, the delegation arrived at Boston University, and discussed with Prof. Fewsmith and Prof. Ye Min from the Division of International Studies (DIS) of the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University on “One Belt One Road” Initiative and risks  of overseas investment, as well as tendency and prospect of the political and economic relations between China and the US.

At noon of 3rd May, the delegation visited the headquarters of the Federal Reserve System in Boston. The Federal Reserve System’s structure is composed of the Board of Governors or Federal Reserve Board (FRB) in Washington, D. C. and twelve regional Federal Reserve Bankslocated in major cities throughout the nation. As the Central Bank of America, Federal Reserve System is responsible for formulating monetary policies and regulating the financial institutions in the United States. The delegation discussed in-depth with Christina Wang, Director of the Research Department on issues such as the development trend of financial markets, monetary policy and financial regulation cooperation between China and the US, etc.

In the morning of 4th May, the delegation arrived at the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) and the Earth Institute in Columbia University discussed with Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, Director of CSD. Prof. Jeffrey Sachs is a world-renowned expert in global development issues, a professor of economics in Columbia University, Senior Advisor of the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He is known as “Father of the Shock Therapy” and was called by Time Magazine “the world’s best known economist” for several times and by the New York Times, “probably the most important economist in the world”. The delegation exchanged inclusively with Prof. Jeffrey Sachs on issues like the economic policies inside the United States, the US business investment policy towards China as well as the construction of the “One Belt One Road” Initiative, etc.

In the morning of 5th May, against the heavy rain, the delegation paid a visit to the Center for the Study of Contemporary China (CSCC), University of Pennsylvania, and had a friendly discussion with Dr. Zeng Yuanyuan, Deputy Director of CSCC on issues like think tank construction and joint effort in international forums, etc. Later, the delegation arrived at the Economics Department of the University of Pennsylvania and visited Prof. Fang Hanming, a famous Chinese economist. Prof. Fang Hanming is a leading scholar in the applied economics area in America, and the current chief editor of both Public Economics and International Economic Review, and he is also member of editorial board of some top economics journals like the American Economic Review. The delegation held an in-depth discussion with Prof. Fang on issues such as the economy in China and the US, financial and trade policies as well as how to refine scientific questions and subjects for research, and trace international frontier studies from the reality of economy, etc.

In the afternoon of 5th May, the delegation reached Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and had efficient communications with Dr. Han Xu from the Department of Management on the theories and practices of issues like global value chain, transnational corporations, the mergers and acquisitions of Chinese-funded enterprises, etc.
