Recently, the research paper Confucius Institute, Belt and Road Initiative, and Internationalization published in International Review of Economics and Finance, an international authoritative journal in economics, by Prof. Han Yonghui (as the corresponding author) was selected as Essential Science Indicators (ESI) top 1% highly cited paper according to the latest ESI database, which has drew wide attentions from the economics academic community. This paper was co-authored by Dr. Wang Hao, a Yunshan Youth Scholar from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), Prof. Jan Fidrmuc from PRIGO University, and Dr. Wei Dongming from Jinan University. Defined by ESI dataset, Highly Cited Papers are those ranked the top 1% based on the number of citations received when compared to other papers published in the same field in the last ten years.

ESI is a basic analytical tool for measuring scientific research performance and tracking the development trend of science launched in 2001 by the World Science and Technology Information Institute (ISI), a world-renowned academic information publishing agency. After the recapitalization of ISI, ESI became a part of Thomson Reuters Web of Science. Its an econometric analysis database counting on more than 10 million records of over 11,000 academic journals from SCI and SSCI collected by Thomson Reuters. It has been one of the most important evaluation indicators used to evaluate the academic level of colleges and universities, academic institutions and nations/regions, and it influences widely all over the world. The data analysis based on the performance of authoritative papers represented by ESI has been widely referred to by the academic community, and ESI data enjoys more reference value, especially since the paper-centric metric has been broken.
