Ambassador ChenJian, Former Deputy Secretary General of UN, Visited GDUFS

Ambassador Chen Jian, the former deputy secretary-general of UN, the President of the United Nation Association of the PRC and the director of College of International Relations of Renmin University of China, and his wife Yao Wenqing visited Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Sui Guangjun, the Party secretary of GDUFS, and Gu Yeli, the vice-president of GDUFS met with them in the VIP Hall of Administration Building in North Campus. The meeting also included representatives of Party Office, Publicity Department, Postgraduate Department, Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies and Translation, School of Interpreting and Translation Studies.
Sui Guangjun briefly introduced the GRIIS and its functions and specially mentioned the report that the Institute handed in time to the Guangdong Provincial Government on how to respond to the earthquake in Japan. The attention that Guangdong Provincial Government paid to GRIIS showed the concern to the international issues which related to the sustainability of the country.
Chen Jian said China had been the focus of the world since the financial crisis. It is necessary for the experts to consider how to cope with the international issues met after the reform and opening-up using good opportunities.
Before the meeting, Chen Jian had a discussion meeting with Gu Yeli, staff of GRIIS, and representatives of Postgraduate Department in the Second Meeting Room of Administration Building in North Campus. The meeting was held by Liu Jisen, deputy secretary general of GRIIS. Gu Yeli introduced the university and detailed in the Institute. He mentioned that the social functions of the university not only include education but also the social service. The institute would emphasize the education and scientific research and provide consultancy advice on international politics to the society, under the leadership of the Guangdong Provincial Government. It has handed more than 20 reports to the government of which 17 was approved.
Yang Shaogang, the chief editor of "Studies on Strategic Decisions" introduced the journal. It is openly published and accepts mainly papers on international strategic studies. After only two years of publication, the journal still has much to improve with some achievements. It is hoped that the journal will develop in academics and become a core journal in China on international strategic studies. The versions of foreign languages will be published to make it known in the world. Yang Shaogang said that the goal needed social support and hoped for the help of the attendants. Li Yongning, the chief editor of "Trends of the International Affairs", introduced this academic journal, which is a internal publication of Guangdong government. It makes use of the foreign resources in the university, indicates the latest trends of the world, and provides consultancy service for policy-making.
Cai Hong, director of Center for European Studies, introduced the Center from three stages of establishment, development and great leap forward, with special mention of the four features of sustainability, internationalization, interdisciplinary and reality. She said that experts of EU had assessed the Center and were satisfied with the results. They regarded the Center was the most potential one in China. However, there are still much to learn from other earlier Centers, especially the European Research Base of Renmin University of China.
With the introduction and approval of the achievements of the Model United Nations Conference of GDUFS, Kang Weimao, the director of the Postgraduate Department, suggested to promoting MUN in the university and in the primary and middle schools in Guangdong. The next goal of GDUFS is to hold a national MUN competition with its rich experience and solid strength.
Chen Jian talked about his former secretary Tang Guocai, a alumnus of GDUFS, from whom he heard of the university. Another way of knowing GDUFS is the MUN competition. He hoped to extend UN knowledge among Chinese young men. The MUN played its role in cultivating leaders with a global vision. Besides, Chen also made several advices to the journals and the Center for European Studies and offered some resources for the development of GRIIS.
