On May 17th, at the invitation of Center for European Studies, Professor Günter S. Heiduk, former academic consultant for EU project visited Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and was employed as the second foreign consultant of the Center.
Sui Guangjun, the Party secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies met with Prof. Heiduk in the morning. Jiao Fangtai, director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, Li Qing, Secretary-general of Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies, Cai Hong, director of Center for European Studies and other officers also attended the meeting. Sui Guangjun said that, during 2004 to 2008 when the project was implemented, the Center for European Studies of GDUFS developed deep friendship with Prof. Heiduk. He also exchanged ideas on the status of China-Europe economic and trade status, and Guangdong’s economy.
Chen Jianping, the vice Party secretary of GDUFS, former director of Center for European Studies and president of the academic committee of Europe Study Center, met with Prof. Heiduk in VIP room of the No. 6 Teaching Building in the afternoon. Chen Jianping introduced the latest development of the Center for European Studies and the cultivation of multi-disciplinary talents in graduate program of European Studies. Cai Hong, director of Center for European Studies, Hu Shaofang from the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, and Wu Yan from GRIIS also attended the meeting.
Cai Hong hosted the ceremony to employ Prof. Heiduk as academic consultant and the lecture for European forum. Chen Jianping delivered the letter of appointment. All the students of European Studies attended the ceremony. Then, Prof. Heiduk gave a lecture named “The Sovereign Debt Crisis of EU”. He analyzed the causes, processes of the crisis, and put forward 6 controversial topics. In the Q & A session, the professor answered questions like Greek’s membership in EU, financial regulation and so on in detail.
At the end of the meeting, Cai Hong said that problems faced by EU were much more complex than those in the US or Japan. However, since the financial crisis, EU has been seeking for solutions to the crisis and the problems of EU system in a prudent and responsible manner.
During his visit, Prof. Heiduk also had an academic meeting with GRIIS. Both sides have cooperation intentions on the research projects about German and European industrial upgrading.
