May 9th 2012 is the 62nd “Europe Day” and the 37th anniversary since China and Europe established diplomatic ties. On this day, Dr. Klause Ebermann, former chief consultant on foreign affairs of EU, former ambassador to China and Mongolia, former ambassador to Egypt and Arab League, was employed as the first academic consultant of Center for European Studies. He also gave a lecture on Euro Zone’s Debt Crisis. The activity was held in room B103 of No. 6 Teaching Building. Chen Jianping, the vice Party secretary of GDUFS and president of the Academic Committee of Europe Study Center, Li Qing, Secretary-general of Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies, Liang Jie, vice director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Cai Hong, director of Center for European Studies, Wang Xiaohai, master tutor of European studies and the subject leader, and all the graduate students of European studies and some students in the master of law witnessed the ceremony.
Before the ceremony, Chen Jianping met with Dr. Klause Ebermann in the VIP room of No. 6 Teaching Building and carried out friendly exchanges.
Cai Hong hosted the ceremony and Europe Forum after the meeting. Chen Jianping presented the letter of appointment to Dr. Klause Ebermann.
Then, Dr. Klause Ebermann began his speech with Jean Monnet’s famous saying, “Europe could not be built in a day”. Started with the root cause of the crisis, he mainly analyzed EU’s solution to this crisis, explained EU economic governance reform in his mind and envisaged 3 future directions of EU.
In the Q&A session, Dr. Klause Ebermann carried out in-depth discussion of the relations between euro debt crisis and European identity, the impact of the crisis on European integration process and other topics.
Cai Hong summarized the activity and said, the history of European integration was the history of crisis in this process. From the previous experience, crisis is one of the motives to European integration.
