Prof. Wang Zhengyi giving a speech
Prof. Wang gave a rational and passionate speech on IPE research methods and fronts at home and abroad and China's participation in global economic governance.
He firstly made a specified explanation to IPE and its research directions. IPE has been developing stably since its rise in 1970s. It focuses on two issues: 1. Influence by the global flow of economic factors to the international relations. 2. Influence by the social and political foundation in a country to the domestic flow of economic factors.
In the 1970s, the US was the greatest power in global political and economic activities. Prof. Wang concluded two research methods for IPE through the analysis of American hegemony theory, global power structure, hegemonic stability theory, world system theory, and international mechanism theory. The two research methods are historical social science method and political and economic correlation method.
In the 1990s, with the end of cold war and the development of globalization, the world political and economic pattern went through great changes. Prof. Wang elaborated on the following points from national research perspective: 1. Will economic globalization change a single country's interest preference? 2. Asia and Europe under regionalism. 3. Inequality in global economic development, which should be quantified in research. 4. International regime and global governance.
Prof. Wang elaborated on China's participation to global economic governance. First, he pointed out the challenges China faced and noted that China's rising and global governance were the research trends of IPE. Then, he explored on the orientation of China, the Sino-American relation, building community of interests and adjustment to China's foreign policies. Finally, according to the way in which IPE define subjects, he put forward three topics for the research on China's participation in global economic governance: 1. Define the content of governance. 2. Clarify the situation when China participates. 3. The influence of international system rules to China.
Then, Prof. Wang communicated with the audience and answered the questions, such as the standard for economic growth, integration of south-east Asia and challenges and opportunities for China's participation in global economic governance. He also recommended books and papers with international influence on this subject.
Finally, Prof. Liu made the conclusion remark to express the gratitude for Prof. Wang's academic passion and research for China's development.
