Centre for Indian Studies was Launched, Scholars Talked Extensively on China’s Participation in Global Economic Governance

On the morning of Dec. 1st, Academic Seminar of “China’s Participation in Global Economic Governance” and the Meeting for Editors of Academic Journals was held in the International Conference Hall on the north campus of GDUFS. Attended were Sui Guangjun, CPC secretary of GDUFS and executive deputy director of GRIIS, Zhong Weihe, president of GDUFS and principals of departments concerned. He Chuantian, vice president of GDUFS hosted the opening ceremony.
On the opening ceremony, He Chuantian read out the letter of congratulation on the establishment of Centre for Indian Studies from Professor Sun Shihai, president of Chinese Association for South Asian Studies. Sui Guangjun, Zhong Weihe, Stephen Nicholas, one of the Yunshan Scholars of GDUFS and Professor Chintamani Mahapatra, from International Studies School of Indian Jawaharlal Nehru University, together launched the Centre for Indian Studies of GRIIS.

First of all, Zhong Weihe gave a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests present, congratulated on the opening of the seminar and wished for a great success. He issued that it was a time when the world economic situation was going through great changes and a historic moment for China to raise international competitiveness and influence. Therefore, how to participate in the global economic governance and enhance discourse competence is an important topic for scholars at home and abroad.

"We convened the seminar in keen response to the changing of international situation. It will not only deepen the experts’ and scholars’ understanding on this topic, but also explore a way to strengthen the transnational cooperation and raise China’s discourse competence in the global economic intercourse," said Zhong Weihe. He also defined the seminar as “Located in Guangdong, Nationwide Influence, Global Vision”, hoping for active expressions of opinions from all guests to make it a high-level and a high-quality Seminar.
Adjust the direction of development to meet global competition
In the first section of the conference, Wang Zhengyi, a PhD. supervisor from International Studies School of Peking University, delivered a keynote speech under the theme of “The power of the world system and challenges to China’s development”. He pointed out four driving forces of the world economy, including the expansion of a nation’s living space, trade and finance, science and technology and the application of international regime. Combining the past facts with data from various areas, he analyzed that China was facing intense competition in the global production chain and in need of adjustment to the world economic development.

Discussion: Scholars from home and abroad expressed their own views
In the second section of the seminar, scholars from home and abroad expressed their own views on global economic governance and challenges to China’s development.
Professor Chen Weiguang, director of Division of Development Planning of GDUFS, had a profound reflection on global economic governance. According to him, the subjects of governance should be diversified, the objects should be extensive, the forms should be democratic, the targets should be commonly beneficial and the division of rights, duties and benefits should be clear. Professor Deng Kebin, research fellow of GRIIS and deputy director of School of Finance of GDUFS, gave a speech on the essence of global economic governance and pointed out that the rising of China should depend on governance on one hand and transformation on the other.

Other scholars made analyses about global governance from an international perspective. Prof. Stephen Nicholas focused on the global business governance. Prof. Chintamani Mahapatra stated that China were still doing well when Europe had showed no signs of economic recovery, which turned out to be an evidence for China’s bright outlook in the participation in global economic governance. Professor Chintamani also referred to the more and more important role of China and India in the global economic development in the following 60 years.

Foreign scholars making a macro-analysis of global governance
After that, many a scholar mainly spoke of China’s participation in the global governance. Professor Zhang Zhenjiang from Ji'nan University shared the experiences of the United States. Professor Li Zijiang, vice chairman of National Mathematical Economic Society made a summary about China’s participation in the global economic governance in terms of production, trade, finance, poverty, corruption and so on. Xiao Yaofei, chief research fellow of GRIIS, found another way by focusing on the shortcomings of China’s participation in the global governance. He Qiongjuan from Guangdong University of Technology talked about the competition strategies of China from economic perspective.

In the section of free discussion, all experts and scholars aired their own views on economic governance.
At the end of the seminar, Sui Guangjun made a summary speech to express gratitude for the brilliant speeches given by all distinguished guests. He also expected that GRIIS would hold seminars on more international issues in order to bring its role of academic exchange platform into full play.

On the afternoon’s Meeting for Editors of Academic Journals, Professor Yang Shaogang, executive chief editor of Strategic Decision Research, firstly gave a brief introduction of the journal. After that, editors present had a discussion on the publication of the journal.

Held at the same time are IPE Workshop and Seminar for the Building of Centre for Indian Studies. Professor Wang Zhengyi gave a lecture on “Research Methods and Research Fronts of IPE in China and Abroad” to all research fellows of GRIIS and young teachers who are the backbone of scientific research in GDUFS. Professor Li Qing, secretary general of GRIIS, Professor Zhao Bole from Yunnan University, Professor Chintamani Mahapatra, Professor Jia Haitao from Jinan University, Doctor Song Haixiao from Guangdong Local Affairs Investigation & Research Center and other experts discussion on the orientation and strategy for the Centre.
