On the afternoon of March 12th, Dr. Patrick Mendis, professor from School of Public Policy of George Mason University and committee member of the UNESCO, was present at GDUFS and gave a lecture titled “A Peaceful War between the Chinese Dream and the American Destiny”. Also attended were Professor Liu Jisen, deputy secretary general of GRIIS, Professor Tang Xiaosong, chief research fellow of GRIIS and all the master students from the Centre for European Studies. The lecture was hosted by Professor Tang Xiaosong.
First of all, Dr. Patrick Mendis looked back at the Sino-American relations from diplomacy, commerce, culture and values, after which he also expressed his expectation for the future development. According to his speech, there exists both gap and connections between China and America. The two nations have realized the important strategic position of the Indian Ocean region for a long time and therefore made relevant naval policies. This made it possible for them to come into conflicts over the issue of the Indian Ocean region. Additionally, what he pointed out as a more complicated problem was the territorial dispute of the East China Sea and South China Sea, with the multilateral relations among America and ASEAN countries involved. When referring to the future, he said he would further research into the Sino-American relation and the new “Pacific World Order”.
In the part of Q&A, Dr. Patrick Mendis defined it common to have conflicts among different countries. To cope with the cyberspace relationship between China and America in a long term, it is important to adopt the mechanism of network monitoring and acknowledge network sovereignty in order to establish strategic reassurance of cyberspace between the two countries.
The lecture was concluded successfully.
