Lecture Program for Foreign Scholars: Member of Academy of the Social Science in Australia Guided Graduate Students How to do Research

On the afternoon of 9th September, Prof. Stephen Nicholas, a member of Academy of the Social Science in Australia and Yunshan scholar of GDUFS, gave a special lecture for young teachers and graduate students on the topic of“How to do Research?” All graduate students and doctoral candidates of Center for European Studies, teachers, graduate students and doctoral students of other faculties attended the lecture. Cai Hong, the deputy secretary general of GRIIS and the director of Center for European Studies hosted the lecture.
At first, Prof. Stephen Nicholas put forward that master degree was a preparation for doctoral candidates to a large extent. The process of doing research was an elaborate project instead of a “coincidence”. After that, he gave several suggestions to all the students, including finding a good supervisor, having a valuable research topic, making clear your research advantage, finding out and making use of data, cherishing every day, and knowing how to find and assess the resource.

Then Prof. Stephen Nicholas raised the question of “Why theory is so important?”He thought that theory could help the scholars a lot with their research. He also advised that the master students should learn with the doctoral candidates and participate in seminars and lectures under the guidance of their supervisors.
In the Q&A session, Prof. Stephen Nicholas answered the question of signing a contract between supervisors and students. He said that in the contract, there should be some assignments that both teachers and students agreed with, including the expectations and responsibilities of both sides. The lecture ended in the heated discussion.
