Xiao Gang Talked about "Reflection on the Japanese Earthquake"

On the afternoon of May 5, professor Xiao Gang gave a lecture on "Reflection on the Japanese Earthquake" in the first moot court. Lu Haiqing, vice Party secretary of the School of Legal Studies and Zhu Hailong, secretary of the Youth League Committee attended the lecture.

The number of casualties in this earthquake of Japan is the highest since the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Xiao Gang analysed from the continuous effects of the earthquake in Japan and led students into the reflection on the earthquake.

Xiao Gang talked about Japan's national response to the disaster. Although Japan is an Asian country, it carries on the Western civilization. As the only developed country in Asia, Japan teaches us a lot in government's emergency response and the national quality of Japanese people in the disaster.

Subsequently, Xiao Gang compared the performances of the two countries in disaster, analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of both sides, and led to a re-positioning and re-thinking of strategic choice of China's economic and social development model. He approved China's current model first, and listed the advantages of Japan's model. Then he proposed that China should not only make use of the advantages of socialism but also learn from other countries to adjust the social development mode and seek for the best direction.

Xiao Gang not only compared the economic and social development models of China and Japan, but also analysed the impact of the earthquake to the Sino-Japanese relation. He started from the disaster assistance by China to Japan, and then compared Japan's different responses to assistances from China and the United States, which reflected the the diplomatic attitudes of Japan to the two sides. In addition, he also talked about the diplomatic strategy of the United States in Asia and the foreign relations postures of East Asia and Southeast Asia.

In the session of questions and answers, Xiao Gang answered the questions from the students. After the lecture, a student said in an interview, "Professor Xiao's views are very convincing, and make me recognize the changes of the international relations today."
