At 2:00 p.m. on April 7, 2011, at the invitation of Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies, scholars from Birmingham University held an academic lecture with the theme of “Global Value Chain” for the students and teachers from the School of International Trade and Economics, School of Management, School of Legal Studies and MBA Center at Room 103 of MBA Center. The lecture was hosted by Li Yongning, director of the Research Center for Urbanization and International City of GRIIS.
Dr. Zhang Yufeng, graduated from Cambridge University, made the initial remarks with the title of "High Value Engineering: Sino-Europe Establishment of Sustainable Network Project". This paper mainly discussed on the importance of engineering value chain in economic growth, with a special focus on the strong driving force for the industrial transformation and upgrading and economic growth mode of the engineering technology and innovation, advanced manufacturing technology, engineering services, sustainable engineering technology, ICT engineering network, etc..
Then, professor Chris Collinge and Stewart MacNeil from the Research Center for City and Region made a speech as to the economy and region development. In their speech, the two professors focused on the efficient cooperation of different economies and the drive of the regional circulation of knowledge capital for the economy. They analyzed the characteristics of innovative economic growth mode with the auto industry and the software industry as an example.
Subsequently, David Dickinson made a brief speech on the venture capital market. In his speech, he elaborated the driving function of financial markets to the industrial development, and his expectations for the future development.
Finally, Dr. Pamela Robinson from the Business School made a speech with the theme of "Global Value Chain”. This research report reflected the academic achievement of Birmingham University research group.
After the speech, the audiences showed great interests and had a lively discussion with the experts.
