Scholars of GDUFS Discussed on the South China Sea Issue with Expert Advisor of Indonesia Congress

On October 13th, Mr. Sigismond BPW Notodipuro, the senior expert adviser for members of the first and second committees of Indonesia Congress, Mr. Alman Helvas Ali, researcher for Defense and Marine Research Institute, Mr. Irman Supriadi Rambe, member of the first committee of Indonesia Congress, Mrs. R. Novi Roudhatul Jannah, secretary of the senior expert adviser for members of the first committee of Indonesia Congress attended the international seminar hosted by Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies and the School of Legal Studies in GDUFS. The seminar is on the theme of "Focusing on South China Sea Issue: the Cooperation and Development of China and Indonesia". The participants also include Professor Gu Yeli, vice president of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Li Qing, Secretary-general of Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies, Wu Junfeng, deputy director of International Cooperation and Exchange Office, Professor Yang Shaogang, executive chief editor of "Studies on Strategic Decisions", Liu Jisen, deputy secretary general of GRIIS, Professor Wang Shuchun, deputy director of School of Legal Studies, Professor Tang Xiaosong, Doctor Hui Gengtian and Professor Cai Jincheng of Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures. The seminar was hosted by Professor Yang Shaogang.

Gu Yeli extended welcome and thanks to the guests. He mentioned the long, stable and fruitful cooperation of the two sides which would be strengthened by this seminar. We should see the complex South China Sea issue in the perspective of development and history. He hope the two sides would increase the exchanges on academics and research. Later, Liu Jisen, deputy secretary general of GRIIS, introduced the development of GRIIS, followed by the speeches on South China Sea issue by the presented scholars.

Mr. Sigismond BPW Notodipuro briefly talked upon the basic form of the national defence and diplomacy of Indonesia and reviewed the history of the cooperation in the speech titled "the National Defence and Diplomacy between Indonesia and China". There are common interests for the two in the cooperation. First, both of them highlight the national unity and territorial integrity. Second, the peace and stability in Southeast Asia will promote the trade development of the two countries. Besides, cooperation and exchange in science and technology will promote the cause of the Indonesian National Defence, to which China could provide knowledge and technology for reference. Therefore, he thought strengthening bilateral mutual trust and national defense capabilities of the two countries will greatly deepening Sino-Indonesia cooperation in national defence and diplomacy.

Mr. Alman Helvas Ali regarded it as a great challenge on how to solve the South China Sea dispute under the jurisdiction of many sides. But the issue provides promising future for development. The Sino-Indonesia cooperation will be deepened. Both sides could strengthen cooperation in the fishing industry, marine resources, oil and natural gas fields. China and Indonesia will exchange information and strengthen the national defense capabilities through cooperation.

Finally, Doctor Hui Gengtian analysed the present situation of South China Sea issue and the roles that the US, Japan and India played in to and their respective purposes. After the analysis, he proposed that the countries should make efforts to communicate considering the opportunities for cooperation, in order to solve the problems peacefully.
