Dr. Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti, Former Director of Indonesian Economic Department, was Appointed as Visiting Professor of GDUFS

On the morning of June 16th, Dr. Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti, former director of Indonesian Economic Department and Professor of Economics University of Indonesia, Andi K Prasodjo, his assistant, Alexandre Soepalal, Education Consul of Indonesia Consulate-General in Guangzhou, Ahmad Dahlan, the first secretary, and their entourage visited Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. President Zhong Weihe met the guests in VIP Hall of the Administration Building in North Campus. The participants also include Jiao Fangtai, director of International Cooperation and Exchange Office, Li Qing, Secretary-general of Guangdong Research Institute for International Studies, Liang Xuehong, the director of the College of International Students, Prof. Yang Shaogang, executive chief editor of "Studies on Strategic Decisions", Quan Yonggen, deputy director of Faculty of Asian Languages and Cultures and Wei Huibin, deputy director of Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture.

Zhong Weihe extended warm welcome to the arrival of Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti, and briefly described the history and development of the university and highlighted the internationalization strategy, including the "310 Project" and the four "internationalizations". Guangdong University of Foreign Stuidies attaches great importance to the cooperation with Indonesian government and Education Department, and has made achievements in overseas students education and academic and cultural exchanges. There are 36 Indonesian students studying in GDUFS some of whom are studying for the master's degree on Chinese International Education. Zhong Weihe also emphasized Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies, and invited Dr. Duo Luojia Dayton to provide advice and support in the economic studies for the Institute and bring cutting-edge information to teachers and students.

Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti appreciated the warm welcome and was happy to visit GDUFS, which owns distinctive international characteristics. He thought that China's position in Southeast Asia and the world had been pivotal. In addition to the economic status, China has become the ideal destination for overseas students. He believed that more Indonesian students would come to study with the development of internationalization. He also mentioned that the discussion between Jiang Zemin and him on how to deal with the financial crisis in 1998. They shared the national policy and economic instruments at that time. The survival and development of modern universities at present require us share more. The exchanges will help to win in the competition. He was willing to promote the cooperation between Indonesian Education Department and GDUFS and join in the research team of Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies

President Zhong Weihe presented Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti the appointment letters of visiting professor of GDUFS and visiting researcher of GRIIS.

After the meeting, Dr. Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti and his delegation discussed with the staff of GRIIS. Li Qing, the secretary-general, Liu Jisen, the deputy secretary general, Yang Shaogang, executive chief editor of "Studies on Strategic Decisions", Li Yongning, chief editor of "Trends of the International Affairs" and Wang Hai, the editor attended the meeting. Dr. Duo Luojia Dayton fully affirmed the research projects and achievements of the Institute and promised to promote the cooperation of the think tanks of both sides in the future.

Subsequently, Dr. Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti had a conversation with students learning Indonesian and gave a lecture entitled "Sino-Indian Economic Cooperation in the Context of Globalization" for students of School of International Trade and Economics in the afternoon.

Introduction ofDorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti:

Dr. Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti was born in 1939, 25thNov, aged 72, who was theminister of Economic Coordinating Deparmentin the Megawati cabinet. Hegraduated from the School of Economics ofUniversity of Indonesia and the California University of theUnited States, Berkeley, andreceived a doctorate in political science in 1980.

In January 1998, the finacialcrisis spread to the Indonesia under the government ofSuharto.Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Indonesia to the United States at the critical moment. WhenHabibie servedas the transitional president, he was still theAmbassador to the U.S.. President Wahid also consideredhimqualified toserve as U.S. Ambassador. During this time,President Abdurrahman Wahid recommended him to bethe minister ofEconomic Coordinating Departmentof theCabinet, but he declined the offer. AfterMegawati took over as president,he was askedagain to be the minister, which he accepted this time.After stepping down the officein 2004, hereturnedto the School of Economics ofUniversityof Indonesiatoteach, and served as economic advisor forPresident Yudhoyono. His students served as Minister of Economic Affairs forPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
