Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies Held Research Centers Seminar

In the afternoon of July 10th, Research Centers Seminar of Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies was held in the 3rdConference Room of the Administration Building in North Campus. The seminar concluded the work of the Research Centers, found out the problems and arranged the future work.

The participants include Sui Guangjun, Party secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Gu Yeli, vice president of GDUFS, Yu Pengyi, deputy director of the Scientific Research Department, Li Qing, secretary-general of GRIIS, Yang Shaogang, executive chief editor of “Strategic Decisions”, Cai Hong, director of Center for European Studies, Tang Xiaosong, director of Center for US Studies, Wang Shuchun, director of Center for Russian Studies, Yang Ke, deputy director of Center for Russian Studies, He Shifan, director of Center for Latin American Studies, Li Yongning, director of Center for Sino-Chile Studies, Lin Jing, deputy director of Center for Sino-Chile Studies. Cai Hong hosted the seminar.

Gu Yeli, the vice president, stated that the seminar was a chance for the Institute to make conclusions, exchange ideas and solve problems, in order to seek for a clearer development path.

Li Qing, the secretary-general, promoted questions on regional studies: What should we study? What system and research method should we take? What are the research questions? Besides, she make arrangement to the future work of the Institute: First, the program of regional studies will start soon under the support of Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Guangdong Province. Second, the Centers will start the application for the cooperative programs between different universities. Third, the Institute will apply for the Center for Regional Studies, aiming to do the regional studies with distinctive features.

Then, the directors of the Centers made speeches on the difficulties and future working plan. They agreed that the main difficulties lay in the lack of founding, researchers and place for meeting and activities. The future work focus is on the cultivation of talents and application of research programs.

Sui Guangjun mentioned that the seminar would help the Centers to be clear of the difficulties and advantages. As the government pays much attention on the regional studies, it is essential to promote the international exchanges and build academic teams. The first problem is the system. The creative work of the Institute sometimes comes against the current system. He hoped that the departments of the University could be cooperative. Second, the regional studies need more scholars and researchers. Third, the place and founding could not be settled in short time, but are under preparation. In addition, the research found could be collected through government, enterprises, research programs and the University. He hoped that the Institute would seize the opportunity and do practical work.
