On Mar 30th, a discussion meeting of the Innovation Team Project of Ministry of Education was held at the International Conference Hall of GDUFS, under the theme of “Mechanism and Strategic Choice of China’s Participation in the Global Economic Governance”. Attended were Gao Runsheng, deputy direct general of Science and Technology Department of Ministry of Education, Xie Chunyan, deputy director of Scientific Research Office of Guangdong Education Department, Sui Guangjun, secretary of CPC committee of GDUFS, Zhong Weihe, President of GDUFS, Gu Yeli, vice president of GDUFS, members of the innovation team and relevant teachers. Also invited were renowned experts in the research field of global economic governance including Zhang Yuyan, professor of Institute of World Economics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Liu Renhuai, academician of Jinan University, Wang Shouyang, professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Zhongfei and Li Xinchun, professors of Sun Yat-sen University. The conference was hosted by Gao Runsheng, Zhang Yuyan and Gu Yeli in different sessions.
In the welcoming address, President Zhong Weihe mentioned that GDUFS had achieved a lot of satisfactory results in scientific research since the twelfth five-year plan. As this Innovation Team Project of Ministry of Education was approved after two years’ research and efforts, it is highly expected to make important research achievements, and cultivate a number of research talents. Zhong sincerely asked the present experts for precious suggestions to the building of the team and its projects.

Reporting on the Team Building and Analyzing the Output
Chen Weiguang, person in charge of the team and head of the Development & Planning Department of GDUFS, gave a detailed report on the team building from the aspects of background, structure and achievements. With the change of globle situation and the emphasisi of the leadership of China, global economic governance has been the national and international strategy for China. Therefore, it is of great necessity and importance to have this innovation team project well built.

As the report suggests, this innovation team project, under the theme of “Mechanism and Strategic Choice of China’s Participation in the Global Economic Governance”, is based on economic management and supported by a wide range of knowledge and multivariant professional backgrounds, featuring cross-discipline and cross-unit cooperation. Research of this project is divided into five sub-topics and each of them is in the charge of a core person. Under the efforts of the members, there have been some achievements with international orientation, of policy significance and completed through cooperation. He explained the project features from five aspects, namely, importance of the research objective, complexity of the research content, cross-discipline of the research area, diversity and scientificity of the research methods, and policy-related research results.
Chen Weiguang also put an emphasis on the institutionalization of the team operation. The working institute is in GRIIS, under the guidance of Educatio Ministry and GDUFS and with the cooperation of Chinese Academy of Sciences and international platforms. Looking into the future, the project will be conducted by 6 stages in three years’ time, aiming to forge a model for an excellent research team with the guarantee of the strongest security mechanism, a high-end think tank serving for the central and local governemnts, and a collaborative innovation team for cultivating talents in global economic governance and with dictinctive academic schools.
Communication among Experts Ignited the Sparks of Ideas
In the communication part, renowned experts in different research fields expressed their own opinions about the report and a series of pertinent suggestions were put forward.
Zhang Yuyan Offering Advice
Zhang Yuyan, leader of the expert group, gave credit for the brand new issue of what theory to adopt for global governance. However, he also expressed concern about the coverage of the research subjects of the project. He strongly recommended that a pointcut should be defined and the relation between each topic be strengthened.
Wang Jun Making Suggestions
Wang Jun, head of Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, defined the core of global economic governance as “putting an end to the idealized policy making”. Therefore, it is important to make it clear about China’s role in the world. Liu Renhuai, however, asserted that the focus should be on the decision of strategic positioning. According to Wang Wenbin, deputy director of Department of Policies and Regulations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this project is of great significance in gathering talents as well as helping China to improve its international status. Additionally, other experts expressed opinions on talents cultivation, coordinated innovation, collaborating partners and so on.
After all the argumentation, Zhang Yuyan read out the writing comments, which suggested that the plan of this project team was feasible and approved its implementation. It is hopes that the team would concentrate the orientation of research and strengthen the cooperation with institutes in China and abroad. Under the spirit of collaborative innovation, it should explore a global governance theory with Chinese characteristics and widely recognized in the world, and suggest practical thinking for central and local governments.
Looking into the Future with Ambition and Determination
Sui Guangjun Making a Summary
When referring to the future development of the innovative team project, Sui Guangjun said that the University will look into the future with ambition and determination. In the summary speech , he mentioned that the team should build practical framework, innovate on the theoretical basis and put effort on talents cultivation.
Gao Runsheng Expressing Opinions
Most uniquely, Gao Runsheng expressed his opinions by proposing a Chinese traditional antithetical couplet. It means the team should take the major theories as its base, the practical issues as its focus and the cultivation of talents as its important task. He replenished the experts’ opinions and required that the project team should depend on platform construction and cooperate with other colleges and universities to build an international think-tank with distinctive features and high levels of capacity.
