The International Political Economy Forum Focused on the New Type of Relationship between Major Powers

On 18th October, the Fourth International Political Economy Forum of “New Type of Relationship between Major Powers” was held in the North campus of GDUFS. The forum was hosted by GRIIS and Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and co-hosted by China International Culture Exchange Center. The concerned universities from all over the country, experts and specialists from different research institutes, journalists, teachers and students from different faculties attended this forum.

The forum had four topics for discussion: concept and theory of the new type of relationship between major powers, current situation and future of the new type of relationship between major powers, new type of relationship between major powers and global governance, new type of relationship between major powers and “Chinese Dream”.

Sui Guangjun, the Party secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and the executive deputy director of GRIIS addressed the meeting and said that the relationship between great powers was one of the most important issues in the world and also a priority when China was dealing with international affairs. The newly-developing countries are playing a more and more important role at the world stage. Facing the complicated international relations, China should handle properly the major power relations and participate in the global governance. Only through this could we finally realize the Chinese Dream. The opening ceremony was held by He Chuantian, the vice president of GDFUS.

Keynote speech: the new type of relationship between major powers from different perspectives

The keynote speech session was hosted by Zhang Yuyan, the director of World Economic and Political Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He said that international economic and political research aimed to combine the research of world politics and economy from two dimensions.

Wang Yi, the director of Center for Global Governance of China Institute of International Studies, introduced the concept of “post-era”.

Li Xiao, the professor from Institute of Economics of Jilin University emphasized that the world pattern today was “power decentralization”.

Cheng Wei, Secretary of the Party Committee of Liaoning University focused on the role of Russia played in major power relations.

Liu Hui, Secretary of the Party Committee of University of International Relations analyzed the position and strategy of China in the world public economic governance from three perspectives.

Ding Yifan, deputy director of World Development Research Institute of Development Research Center of the State Council mainly talked about the sovereign debt in the international relations.

Li Qing, Secretary-general of GRIIS pointed out that China had already taken global governance as its national interests and responsibility.

Group Discussion: the Future of China Global Governance

In the afternoon, the experts discussed the topics in five groups. Sui Guangjun hosted the closing ceremony. Prof. Tang Xiaosong, chief researchers of GRIIS and executive deputy director of Canadian Studies Center, Fan Weiwen, director of Truth and Wisdom Press, Tu Xinquan, vice president of World Trade Organization Research Institute of University of International Business and Economics, Yao Zhizhong, director assistant and researcher of World Economy and Politics Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Bian Xiaochun, deputy director of World Development Research Institute of Development Research Center of the State Council made the group reports on the closing ceremony.

Group Discussion

The first group focused on the concept and theory of the new type of international relations. The second and third group focused on the current situation and future of global governance. The fourth group emphasized the importance for emerging economies to participate in global economic governance. The fifth group clarified the connection between the new type of relationship between major powers and Chinese Dream. Wang Zhengyi and Zhang Yuyan also delivered conclusion speeches.

In the handover ceremony for the fifth session, Cheng Wei said he would try his best to hold the next forum with Liaoning University. The fourth international political economy conference ended successfully.
