The Conference on the Discipline Construction of Global Economic Governance Held in Guangzhou

On July 24, 2021, the Conference on the Discipline Construction of Global Economic Governance was successfully held by Guangdong Institute for International Strategies of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) in Guangzhou. The conference invited experts and scholars from Institute of World Economics and Politics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), National Institute of International Strategy of CASS, Guangdong Federation of Social Sciences, Institute of International Strategy of Party School of the Central Committee of CPC, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Nankai University, Jilin University and think tanks, which was presided over by Prof. He Chuantian, Vice President of GDUFS.

      

Speech by Prof. Sui Guangjun


Prof. Sui Guangjun, Party Secretary of GDUFS and Executive Vice President of Guangdong Institute for International Strategies, delivered in the speech that China is still facing the shortage of international talents currently, and the discipline construction of global economic governance was critical to solve this problem. GDUFS is committed to cultivating the international talents and providing talents pool for global economic governance. He expected that experts could put forward their suggestions and solutions to fuel the discipline development.

          

Prof. Li Qings Speech


Prof. Li Qing, Secretary General of Guangdong Institute for International Strategies and Executive Director of Huangpu Research Institute of GDUFS, introduced the GDUFS discipline construction of global economic governance from four aspects: theoretical researches on global economic governance, achievements made in this regard, innovation of talent cultivation mode and social services. She pointed out that researches about global economic governance was on the rise. The major practical issues about global economic governance has always been the focal points of GDUFS. In order to solve these issues, GDUFS has carried out relevant researches, including 9 major projects of the National Social Science Foundation, 1 project of Changjiang Scholars Innovation Team of Ministry of Education, established the Collaborative Innovation Center for 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road Studies jointly with provincial departments. At present, GDUFS has formed the multi-level talent training system from bachelor, master, doctor to post-doctor, and trains high-quality compound talents through numerous international innovation programs. Meanwhile, GDUFS is actively cooperating with the national diplomatic strategy, conducting decision-making consultation, working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, and has held the International Think Tank Forum of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road for 5 consecutive years. It is committed to making use of its advantages as a university and serving as a bridge for international communication.

Zhang Yuyan, President of China Society of World Economics, Department Member of CASS and Director of Institute of World Economics and Politics of CASS, proposed that we can construct the basic theoretical framework of global governance research based on the governance reason, object, time, body, mode and content. Li Xiangyang, President of the National Institute of International Strategy of CASS, believed that under the background of desinicization, we should improve Chinas participation in global governance through measures responding to desinicization, the construction of global value chain rules and economic diplomacy. Ye Jinbao, Member and Full-time Vice President of the Party Leadership Group of Guangdong Provincial Social Science Federation and Secretary General of Guangdong Provincial Leading Group of Philosophy and Social Science Planning, mentioned that we can consider the discipline system construction and explore the relationship between cultural diffusion and trade from the perspective of economy and culture. Prof. Wu Zhicheng, Vice President of the Institute of International strategy of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee, suggested that we can develop the discipline construction starting from the mature majors and publish systematic and professional teaching materials. Distinguished Prof. Li Xiao, President of Hengqin Smart Finance Research Institute and Changjiang Scholar of Ministry of Education, believed that academic researches should be objective and rational and we need to form a theory with Chinese characteristics. Prof. Song Guoyou, Director of the Research Center for Economic Diplomacy of Fudan University, proposed to highlight and feature the interdisciplinary character of global economic governance disciplines, thus to better provide talents to the international economic field with great top design. Prof. Huang Xinfei, Dean of International Finance School of Sun Yat-Sen University, considered that key elements for discipline construction were to clarify the discipline direction, build good teams, focus on academic researches and implement talent training plans. Additionally, we need to establish talent feedback mechanism and enhance the discipline interaction in related fields. Prof. Hu Jian, Director of the Soft Power Research Center of Shanghai Academy of Social Science, expressed that in order to lay solid foundation for future theoretical innovation, we should strengthen the expansion of humanities and improve the humanities quality in global economic governance. Zhao Jinglai, Editor of Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences, held a view that we need collaborative support from various disciplines of humanities to address practical issues, and build the connection between theoretical researches and practical issues through the transmission of applied researches. Prof. Yang Na, Professor of Zhou Enlai School of Government of Nankai University, mentioned that the discipline construction of global economic governance should highlight its own characteristics, and the talent training should give priority to the research methods.

The experts all agreed that the discipline construction of global economic governance is vital, which has a vast prospect and practical significance. We should jointly clarify the discipline definition, frame disciplinary boundaries, and shape a research paradigm to better serve our society and train talents for global economic governance in the new era.
